ASP.NET Web Applications

We can develop simple or highly sophisticated web-applications for your business. These applications can be used internally to help your business processes and communications work more efficiently or externally to help serve your customers better and increase sales. We can do it all from creating the database to programming the functionality of the interface to the graphics.

All of our applications are professionally programmed and take advantage of the latest technologies. We also have several proven templates and other structures developed in house that allow us to deliver web solutions quicker and cheaper.

Our web solutions are developed in Microsoft ASP.NET and use Microsoft SQL Server as the database of choice whenever possible. We find that Microsoft ASP.NET works and integrates best with Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) and since IE is the most popular web browser in use today you are ensured greater compatibility with more users.

There are several advantages that a web-based solution offers over a typical desktop application:

• Centralized database (all information and applications reside on one or two servers that are usually more secured and are backed up regularly).
• License free use on desktops if your users are running Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE). IE is free with Windows (unlike MS Office applications for example).
• Easily apply future modifications and updates because only the server needs to be updated and not each individual computer.
• Easily deployed to other sites and users because they only need to be granted access to the server and have IE installed (you do not need your IT department to install the application on each computer).
• Information is updated and shared in real time with all other users.

.NET Desktop Applications

If you require more rapid or complicated calculations, are dealing with large volumes of information at one time, or if you have a situation where you want to process information in batch mode because of a slow, remote, or unreliable Internet connection then a .NET desktop solution is probably what you need.

Just like a web solution a desktop solution can be fully web connected. The difference is that some of the information processing can occur on the local desktop computer the user is running. This allows for faster computation and response times since there are less requests made to the server. Also a web application has to transmit the application along with the data to the desktop while a desktop application only has to send and receive data.

Desktop applications are often easier and cheaper to develop and can offer richer functionality because they are not limited by the reduced capabilities of a browser.

Applications built in Microsoft Office

Desktop Applications can be developed rapidly inside of Microsoft Access or Microsoft Excel. These applications can take advantage of the built in capabilities that the Microsoft Office products offer. This allows users already familiar with or trained on these products to get up to speed quickly with applications built around them. This also reduces programming time and costs because the framework is already present. For example Excel contains extensive charting capabilities. Rather than trying to re-program the charting functionality from scratch in a new application we could develop an application that creates charts and graphs automatically in Excel for you and that you can then futher manipulate yourself before printing.

Applications can be programmed in Microsoft Access as well and these look just like any other desktop application. Microsoft Access applications can take advantage of the built in and rich database, queries, forms, and reporting functionality. Access is also useful for creating connections to other databases that your organization uses to pull out and consolidate critical information from these databases and provide reports, lists, and KPIs.

These applications are often less complicated and easier to distribute and install. We also have a license to a redistributable run-time environment for Microsoft Access. This means that you do not have to buy a license for Microsoft Access for each computer that uses the applications we create for you.

We have extensive experience in VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) which is the programming language used by Microsoft Office. There is virtually no application that we cannot develop within Microsoft Office and we develop everything from custom functions to entire applications.

We can offer a second opinion on a major software purchase that you might be considering and help you make your decision. Perhaps there are alternatives such as having us develop a custom system that will have no compromises. Sometimes a larger software purchase can be made less complicated and less expensive if you break the needs down and go with a mix of custom solutions and off the shelf software.

Perhaps your organization has some older systems in place that appear to almost have become part of your work's culture. These systems are often hard to part with and expensive to replace. Besides everyone in the organization is already trained on these systems and they have performed well over the years. The only problem may be getting valuable information from these systems. We can look at these older systems and extract this information into a modern "data warehouse" using MS SQL Server or another database platform.

Once your information is in a data warehouse you will be surprised at what can be accomplished! We can also build in connections to other data sources such as a budget file or credit card expense tracking system etc. Even if your ultimate plan is to convert to a modern ERP system we could buy you a couple of years by quickly implementing some beneficial solutions to get you through the implementaion phase of a major new software package. If you find that the majority of your reports are coming to you in large Excel files that take a long time to compile and may even contain errors then we definitely need to talk.

Sometimes it is helpful to even see what kinds of information you have available within your systems. You would be surprised how much information modern systems track. Unfortunately it is often the case that a large amount of this information is difficult to get to or use within the same application that captures the information. It is as if software developers who create these applications either put more time and energy into the capture of information with the reporting capabilities being more of an after thought or that they just don't have the expertise to create a useful and highly flexible reporting interface that allows you to get at all of this useful information. This is where we come in. We can get at all of the information, show you what is there and explain how you can use it to get the reports you need to manage your business.

Even if you have something as simple as say making a monthly Excel spreadsheet work better by importing information that currently might be keyed or using some custom functions to automate a set of tasks that you are doing manually we can suggest some things to help you. Basically we can connect your information in many different ways allowing you to quickly find answers by clicking links. For example you could click on an expense line in your income statement and see the accounts that make up the total, click on an account and see the transactions, click an A/P batch transaction and see the journal details, click on a journal entry and jump to the souce document, if paperless we could then display the invoice and / or purchase order at this point and also information relevant to that specific transaction such as the payment date, method, cheque number, etc. Whatever information you have we can get to it and automate your analysis. Training and Manuals

We offer extensive training on any application that we have developed. After the solutions are ready for production we can come to your location and perform hands on training with your staff. We can also conduct remote training using various computer sharing technologies if you would prefer this.

A great deal of care is given to the user interface when we design a new software product and this is to ensure that the software is both easy to use and easy to learn. Because of this we have had some cases where very little to no training has even been required or the training was performed in-house. So you can decide how much or how little training you want from us.
